A New Chapter for “Stepping Stones”

When I first wrote “Stepping Stones,” I imagined it as a piano-driven anthem about growth, one small victory at a time. But in revisiting the piece, I felt it needed a fresh voice—something raw, warm, and intimate. That’s where Deo came in. From our very first rehearsal, his fingers danced over the fretboard with such emotion that I knew we were onto something special.

Collaborating with Deo Budnevich

Deo’s background in jazz fusion and classical fingerstyle brought unexpected colors to the track. He suggested a cascading arpeggio for the intro that instantly set a different mood: reflective yet hopeful. As we recorded in the studio, I watched him coax new harmonics and subtle bends from his guitar, weaving them into the melody I’d grown so familiar with. The result is a version of “Stepping Stones” that feels both comfortingly familiar and thrillingly new.

Discovering the First Stone

I first scribbled the title “Stepping Stones” in my notebook last Summer in Italy. At the time, I was thinking about all the little moments that lead us forward—learning a new chord, perfecting a rhythm, even overcoming stage fright. I wanted a song that felt like each small victory stacked on the next, until you realize how far you’ve come.

One evening after guitar practice at Wynwood School of Music, I sat at the piano and started experimenting with a simple four-note motif that echoed the feeling of taking one deliberate step. The melody felt hopeful but grounded, and I knew it was the seed of something special.

Building the Path: Writing & Refining

Once I had that intro motif, the real work began. Between capoeira, ice-skating lessons, and school projects, I carved out time each day to flesh out the verses and chorus:

• Verse 1 captured the uncertainty of starting something new.
• Pre-chorus built tension with a rising harmonic pattern.
• Chorus burst open with a bright, confident melody—my musical “I did it!” moment.

I recorded rough demos on my phone and shared them with my music teacher, who suggested adding a bridge that shifted from minor to major—a musical reminder that struggles can turn into triumph. That change became the emotional heart of “Stepping Stones.”

Taking Feedback, Gaining Confidence

Even with the bridge in place, I wondered if it truly connected. So I “busked” a stripped-down version at our local library’s Saturday open-mic. My hands trembled at first, but as I played the chorus, strangers in the audience nodded along and one kind listener said, “That bridge gives me goosebumps—it feels like hope breaking through.” Their encouragement cemented my belief: this song belonged on the YTBD stage.

Facing the Finals

On the day of the finals, backstage felt like a mix of nerves and excitement. All around me were talented teens—powerful vocalists, guitar virtuosos, even a few classical composers. I reminded myself that “Stepping Stones” wasn’t about being the best, but about sharing my story.

When it was my turn, I took a deep breath, closed my eyes at the first piano note, and let the music carry me. I felt every challenge I’d overcome—every practice session, every bit of feedback, every small step—flow through each bar.

Hearing My Name & What’s Next

When they announced “Stepping Stones” as the winning composition, time seemed to slow. I looked out and saw my parents cheering, my family, wiping happy tears, and friends jumping up and down. In that moment, I realized the song had done exactly what I’d hoped: connected hearts and celebrated growth.

Winning YTBD 2025 is a milestone—but it’s also a reminder that progress is made one stone at a time. Already, I’m arranging “Stepping Stones” for a string quartet and sketching ideas for my next piece, inspired by new experiences.

Arrival at Interlochen: A Dream Come True

From the moment I arrived at Interlochen, I knew I was in a special place. Nestled in the woods of Michigan, the camp’s atmosphere felt like a dream come true for any young artist. Everywhere I looked, creative people were practicing their crafts—musicians rehearsing their instruments, dancers perfecting their routines, and visual artists painting breathtaking scenes of nature. The energy and passion that filled the air were infectious, and I was eager to dive right in.

A Full Scholarship and a Full Heart

Being accepted to Interlochen on a full scholarship felt like an honor, and I was determined to make the most of every opportunity. The camp is known for being one of the most prestigious arts programs in the world, and it was incredible to be part of such a vibrant and supportive community. I had the chance to meet other musicians who shared my passion for creating and performing, and we quickly bonded over our love of music.

A Musical Adventure

My days were filled with masterclasses, ensemble rehearsals, and one-on-one lessons. It was intense but exhilarating! We worked on honing our technical skills, exploring new styles of music, and pushing the boundaries of what we could achieve as young artists. One of the highlights was participating in orchestra rehearsals, where we had to bring our A-game and play with focus and precision.

Outside of structured rehearsals, I loved the freedom to experiment and jam with other campers. Music was everywhere—around the campfire, at impromptu gatherings in the practice rooms, or simply while walking through the woods. Being surrounded by people with the same dedication to their art was inspiring.

Finding Inspiration in Nature

One of Interlochen’s unique aspects is its stunning natural surroundings. Practicing music in the middle of a serene forest, with birds singing and the wind rustling through the trees, felt magical. It was easy to be inspired and to feel a deep connection to the music I was playing. We even had opportunities to perform outdoors, which added an extra layer of beauty to our performances.

Friendships That Will Last a Lifetime

Aside from the incredible musical training, some of the best moments were the friendships I made. We came from all over the world, but our shared passion for the arts created an unbreakable bond. Late-night talks, silly jokes, and cheering each other on during performances made my time at Interlochen unforgettable. We supported each other, learned from one another, and created memories I will always cherish.

A Place to Grow and Dream Big

Interlochen isn’t just about developing technical skills; it’s about growing as a person and an artist. The experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me to believe in myself and my abilities. I left with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of the power of music to bring people together.

What’s Next?

My time at Interlochen has only fueled my passion for music. With dreams of becoming a prolific and professional musician, I’m more determined than ever to continue my journey, write new songs, and inspire others with my music. The lessons and memories I brought home from Interlochen will carry with me forever, and I can’t wait to see where they take me next.

Miami, FL – The Blockchain Center Miami and Bits And Tokens are happy to announce a major exhibition of new work by 5-YEAR-OLD artist and designer, Soleil River Nation showing exclusively at Blockchain Center Miami, December 3-6, 2019 in conjunction with the 18th edition of Art Basle Week 2019 in the sunshine state of Miami, FL.

Having just been named the nation’s newest Little Dreamer, Miss Nation has been invited to display at the first-ever Art x Tech exhibition,  featuring one of a kind immersive art experience for the Art Basel Week 2019.

Curated by ATO Gallery and multiple independent blockchain artists, Art x Tech will exhibit artists from around the world presenting acclaimed works in various mediums such as painting, sculpture, sustainable installations, live performances, and film and video projections.

Though only 5, Soleil’s work inspires emotions that the viewer can feel in their soul. Her paintings are condensed versions of colors, energy, and emotions, and her art, titled “Hearts to Give,” is an explosion of the emotions and raw feelings she experienced the first time she learned about children living in poverty.

Soleil started painting at age four, and was the youngest artist to showcase her paintings during the first only kids’ exhibit, happening simultaneously with Art Basel in Miami Beach in 2018 – “Wonder”. Since then she has been accumulating private collectors and her works hang in many prestigious homes and collections. Recently, one of her pieces was sold for thousands of dollars at a live-auction, during the 5th annual gala for Little Dreams Foundation (founded by Phil and Orianne Collins) in which she was also their first and the youngest ‘Little Dreamer’ art award recipient.
